These three special education schools, located in New York and New Jersey, are dedicated to educating students with autism spectrum disorders.

Parents of children with an autism spectrum disorder are often challenged in finding the best education environment for their children. Some educators have branched off and formed schools dedicated solely to autism education. These three autism schools are located in New Jersey and New York.

Gersh Academy

Located in Melville, New York, the Gersh Academy is dedicated to educating children in 3rd through 12th grade. The Gersh Academy caters to educating those with Asperger’s Syndrome, high-functioning autism, ADHD, Anxiety, Tourette’s syndrome and other neurological conditions. The school utilizes the I Am I Can Program which “uses a cognitive behavioral approach, allowing students to better understand their neurobiological limitations and how to self-manage and regulate their symptoms.”

All of the teachers at the school are certified as special educators by the State of New York. Additionally, the school employs Licensed Social Workers, Clinical Psychologists, Speech-Language Pathologists, and Occupational Therapists. Understanding the need for a small classroom size, the school maintains a six students to two adults ratio in grades 3-5 and eight students to two adults ratio for the middle school and high school program. Gersh Academy can be reached by calling (631) 385-3342.

Learning Spring Academy

The Learning Spring Academy is focused on educating elementary-age students who are on the autism spectrum. Located in the Chelsea area of New York City, the school’s mission is “to pioneer and advance educational opportunities for high-functioning students diagnosed on the autistic spectrum.” The program at the school includes academics, social and emotional programs, speech-language therapy, and addressing sensory concerns.

Learning Spring Elementary School first opened its doors to students in the fall of 2001. The school was the result of hard work on the part of New York City parents of children with high-functioning autism who were unable to find an appropriate educational setting for these students. For more information on the school, please call (212) 239- 4926.

The Y.A.L.E. Schools

Founded in 1976, the Y.A.L.E. Schools offer “specialized education programs to young children and adolescents in southern New Jersey.” The school utilizes the Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) approach to educating students with autism spectrum disorders as well as those with other special needs. Schools are located in Cherry Hill, Northfield, Medford Lakes, Voorhees, and Williamstown, New Jersey.

Some of the school locations focus on a certain population of special education students. The Medford Lakes school caters to those with Asperger’s Syndrome while the Voorhees school provides a positive learning environment for students with autism. For more information on the Y.A.L.E. Schools, including campus-specific programs, please visit The Y.A.L.E. Schools website.

Providing a comprehensive education program for individuals with an autism spectrum disorder can prove challenging. The staff at these three schools, located in New York and New Jersey, have the experience needed to provide the best in autism education.
