Autism Speaks and Toys R Us sponsor Walk Now for Autism events across the United States. Several cities in New Jersey and New York have walks scheduled throughout 2008.
Autism Speaks, one of the nation’s most vocal supporters of autism research, has partnered with Toys R Us to sponsor the Walk Now for Autism event across the United States. While many walks take place in the early part of the year, several walks are still scheduled for Fall 2008. Central New JerseyScheduled to be held on October 19, 2008 in West Windsor, New Jersey, the Central New Jersey Walk Now for Autism fundraising event has already raised over $40,000. The New Jersey organizers have scheduled a kick-off event in Bridgewater, NJ on July 19, 2008 and another in Princeton, NJ on September 5, 2008. According to the Walk Now for Autism website, “The Kick-off event is an opportunity for you to help educate and spread awareness about autism, as well as raise funds to improve the lives of those living with autism. You will leave with fundraising materials in hand and a sense of confidence about pursuing your goal to raise funds for research, awareness and advocacy.” Long Island, New YorkAutism advocates from around the Long Island area will be gathering at the Jones Beach State Park in Wantagh, New York on October 5, 2008 to take part in the 2008 Long Island Walk Now for Autism event. The Long Island walk was one of the largest walks in 2007 with over 24,000 people walking to raise over $1.8 million for Autism Speaks. With several months of fundraising left, the 2008 teams have already raised over $232,000. The 2008 Walk Now for Autism Kick-Off Luncheon will be held on July 28, 2008 at the Crest Hollow Country Club from 12:00 pm – 1:30 pm. August 26, 2008 is scheduled to be Autism Awareness Night at the Long Island Ducks Citibank Park with $1 from each ticket benefitting Autism Speaks. Rochester, New YorkAutism fundraisers in Rochester, New York will be gathering at Monroe Community College on September 27, 2008 to show their support for Autism Speaks. Although the Rochester event isn’t as large as the Long Island Walk, the 2007 Rochester Walk raised over $143,000 for autism research. Participants in the 2008 walk that raise at least $100 will earn a Walk Now for Autism t-shirt. The Walk Now for Autism events are one of the most visible autism awareness events held on a national level. From the Autism Speaks website, “Powered by volunteers and families with loved ones on the autism spectrum, this successful grassroots fundraising effort not only generates vital funds for autism research but also raises awareness about the increasing prevalence of autism and the need for increased research funding to combat this complex disorder.” Sources:
