The National Autism Association's annual conference will be held from November 13-16, 2008 at the Hyatt Regency in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Autism conferences are a big draw for parents, caregivers and autism professionals across the United States. As autism has become more prevalent, more organizations are taking the time to produce conferences to meet the demands and needs of the public.

The National Autism Association (NAA) has released details of its November 2008 conference. According to the official National Autism Conference website, “From cutting-edge research of environmental toxins to dietary interventions, legal and legislative strategies to estate planning, the world’s most renowned experts will gather to share their knowledge and expertise with parents and practitioners.”

Dr. Doreen Granpeesheh

Although the keynote speaker has not been announced, Dr. Doreen Granpeesheh is confirmed to present at the conference. Dr. Granpeesheh is the Founder and Executive Director for the Center for Autism and Related Disorders (CARD). In 2007, Dr. Granpeesheh was named the “Professional of the Year” by the Autism Society of America

Dr. Andrew Wakefield

Another well-known name in the autism community that will be presenting at the National Autism Conference is Dr. Andrew Wakefield. Dr. Wakefield is a gastroenterologist who has done extensive research on the relationship between gut issues and autism spectrum disorders. In addition, Dr. Wakefield has also extensively researched the possible link between the MMR vaccine and autism.

Conference Schedule

The National Autism Conference will be held from November 13 – 16, 2008 at the Hyatt Regency in Weston, Florida (just outside Fort Lauderdale). The first day of the conference is an intense all-day workshop entitled “Special Education Law: Intensive Training for Parents” which will be presented by Lynne Arnold, Tim Adams and Mitchel Perlman. Lunch will be provided for workshop attendees.

On Friday, November 14, the workshop will get into full swing with the keynote speaker taking the floor from 9:00 – 10:15 am. The remainder of the day will highlight several featured speakers as well as breakout sessions and access to the exhibition hall. Saturday and Sundays schedule mimic that of Friday with the conference wrapping up at 3:30pm on Sunday.

Registration Information

Early registration is in effect until September 1, 2008 with the full conference rate for NAA members set at $250. Nonmembers will be charged a $300 full conference fee but membership can be purchased online for $35 for an individual membership. Partial conference registration fees start at $100.

It is important to note that the NAA has instituted an official cancellation policy for the 2008 conference. If you need to cancel then you must do so prior to October 15, 2008. However, your entire conference fee will not be refunded; a $75 processing fee will be withheld from your refund. No cancellations will be refunded after October 15, 2008. Cancellations must be submitted in writing. For more information, contact the National Autism Association at (877) 622-2884.

The National Autism Conference is just one of many autism conferences scheduled in 2008. Each conference has a different focus but one commonality among all of the conferences is that attendees will definitely leave with more knowledge about autism than they had at the beginning of the conference.
