With rates of autism spectrum disorders averaging 1 in 150 children in the United States, therapy centers are facing an increasing demand for their services. One of the nation’s most respected therapy centers is CARD, the Center for Autism and Related Disorders. CARD follows the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) which is “a systematic approach to the assessment and evaluation of behavior, and the application of interventions that alter behavior.”
CARD was founded in 1990 by Dr. Doreen Granpeesheh to provide services to individuals with autism, PDD-NOS, and Asperger’s Syndrome. The organization has grown from one location to seventeen locations around the world. Over the past 18 years, CARD has helped tens of thousands of families learn strategies to help their child on the autism spectrum.
CARD currently has 13 offices in the United States; Arizona, California, New York, Virginia and Texas all have CARD offices. In addition, the Center for Autism and Related Disorders also has a presence in Sydney, Australia and Auckland, New Zealand. Currently CARD is considering opening additional offices in New York City as well as new offices in Honolulu, Hawaii and Louisville, Kentucky.
CARD provides a wide variety of services including supervision and consultation of ABA programs, direct 1:1 therapy, and parent training. CARD is unique in that the organization closely follows children as they progress through the prescribed treatment plans. Regular meetings and follow-up assessments are scheduled to ensure that the child is meeting goals and to make adjustments as needed.
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is the hallmark of the services provided by CARD. ABA is one of the most-studied approaches to autism intervention. Over the past 30 years more than 1,000 studies have been published centered on the efficacy of ABA for both children and adults with an autism spectrum disorder.
“ABA generally focuses on the process of behavior change with respect to the development of adaptive, prosocial behavior and the reduction of maladaptive behavior.” ABA is often used to teach individuals new skills, limit unsuitable behaviors, and to take lessons learned in one setting and apply them in an entirely different setting.
CARD is an industry leader when it comes to ABA therapy for individuals on the autism spectrum. The organization currently serves approximately 1,000 children as they progress through CARD’s unique program. The attention to detail and personalized plans that are offered by the Center for Autism and Related Disorders continue to make this organization the first choice for parents of children with autism.
