ASA Phoenix Chapter's Autism ConferenceAttend the 10th Annual Autism/Asperger’s Conference in Glendale, AZFrom yoga to biomedical interventions, the ASA-GPC's 10th Annual Autism/Asperger's Conference provides Arizona families with the latest autism information.
The Greater Phoenix Chapter of the Autism Society of America (ASA-GPC) will host its 10th Annual Autism/Asperger’s Conference on April 4-5, 2009 at Glendale Community College. The ASA-GPC has partnered with the Asperger Parent Network, Affinity Family Care, Arizona Autism United and many other local organizations to host this year’s event. 2009 Conference HighlightsThe conference will be filled with two days of informative discussions and networking opportunities. The ASA-GPC has chosen to highlight four specific sessions: Recognizing and Treating Seizures and Brain Inflammation with Jeff Bradstreet, MD, Nutritional Problems in Children with Autism, Assessment and Treatment with James Adams, PhD, the Center for Autism and Related Disorders (CARD) will present the results of a one-year study of intense Applied Behavior Analysis and a unique session focusing in the benefits of Yoga with Maria Kowch. Keynote AddressesDiane Twacthman-Cullen, PhD, CCC-SLP will present Saturday’s keynote address. Twacthman-Cullen is the editor-in-chief of Autism Spectrum Quarterly and will be discussing effective intervention practices. Jean McAfee, MD is the mother of a child with high functioning autism and author of the book Navigating the Social World. McAfee will be presenting Sunday’s keynote address; the topic of the speech is "Navigating the Social World." Breakout TracksThe conference offers three concurrently running tracks on each day. On Saturday, Diane Twacthman-Cullen will be hosting one track. The other two options available are the Behavior Therapy and Social Groups Track and the Biomedical Track. On Sunday, Jean McAfee, MD will host one track while the other two available tracks are the Teaching Track and a series of sessions that focus on Communication and Life Issues. Continuing EducationThe conference organizers have arranged for speech-language pathologists and audiologists. The Arizona Department of Health Services for Speech Pathologist & Audiologists has approved .7 CEUs for each conference day. Conference Registration and Location InformationThe 2009 ASA-GPC Autism/Asperger’s Conference will be held at the Student Union Building at Glendale Community College (GCC). GCC is located at 6000 W. Olive Avenue. Registration begins at 7:00 am each day and coffee and juice are available. The registration period provides a great opportunity for parents and professionals to network with one another. Registration fees begin at $25 for a one-day admission for a person with autism or Asperger’s Syndrome to $210 for a two-day pass for professionals. The Autism Society of America’s Greater Phoenix Chapter provides parents in the Phoenix metropolitan area with a wide range of services and support. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the group’s locally-produced and hosted autism conference.
