Autism spectrum disorders are being diagnosed at a rate of 1 in 150 children in the United States, with that number expected to rise. As autism is becoming more common, several organizations are spearheading large fundraising campaigns to promote autism awareness, research and treatment options.

Autism Speaks and Toys R’Us have combined to sponsor the Walk Now for Autism events held throughout 2008. Learn more about how to participate in an Arizona or California Walk Now for Autism fundraiser.

Tempe, Arizona

The 2008 Arizona Walk Now for Autism fundraiser will be held on Sunday, November 2 at the Tempe Beach Park. Autism Speaks will be partnering with the Southwest Autism Research & Resource Center (SARRC) for this year’s event. In 2007, the event hosted more than 7,000 walkers and gathered over $500,000 in donations. The 2008 Arizona walk has already received more than $31,000 in donations. Call (480) 293-4373 for more information on the Arizona event.

Orange County, California

Scheduled for November 16, 2008 at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California, the Orange County Walk Now for Autism will feature the new Grand Club. Every walker that raises over $1,000 will be entered into the Grand Club and will receive a pin, recognition at walk events and access to the Grand Club Tent.

The Orange County coordinators have also created a special fundraising promotion. Every walker that raises $100 in donations by July 15, 2008 will be entered into a drawing for a two night stay at the Embassy Suites hotel. The Orange County walk team can be reached at (323) 549-0500.

San Diego, California

The San Diego 2008 Walk Now for Autism event will be held on November 8 at beautiful Balboa Park. In addition to the actual walk, the event will also feature entertainment and an autism community resource fair. All walkers who raise at least $100 will earn a Walk Now for Autism t-shirt. The San Diego event will also be creating a Grand Club with similar amenities to the Orange County Grand Club. Call (323) 549-0500 for registration information.

Sacramento, California

With almost $35,000 already raised, the 2008 Sacramento Walk Now for Autism will take place on Sunday, September 28 at the UC Davis M.I.N.D. Institute.
